Erik Matson, Organist
Erik Matson is an organist, pianist, and occasional composer. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Church Music and a minor in Mathematics from Valparaiso University, where he studied organ with Stephen Schnurr, harpsichord with Joseph Bognar, and voice with Ralph Klapis and David Govertsen. While at Valpo, he served as Co-Director of the University Handbell Choir (the “Resurrection Ringers”), as Matins organist, and as Morning Prayer Music Coordinator. His particular interests include organ music of the 20th Century and of the Renaissance, vocal music of the Medieval Period, music theory and analysis, and the history of Christian hymnody. Erik has much experience serving in the Lutheran church and other denominations, and currently serves as Organist at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mount Prospect in Illinois. In August, Erik will begin graduate studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, pursuing a Master of Music in Organ and Sacred Music, in the organ studio of Christopher Young.

The Theme for Erik’s program will be “Chorales and Chants”, in that the majority of pieces featured will be based on either German Chorales or Gregorian Chants.
Featured composers will include Bach, Langlais, Decker, Messaien, and Distler. We hope you will join us as we welcome a first-time performer on our series!

Enter the Wells Street Structure from the north side of
Wells Street, between 12th and 13th Streets, and enjoy the
beautiful view of Gesu as you walk south on 12th Street.
